Welcome to the incredible story of Ibis Atlantic (IA)! Our mission is to share the exquisite flavors and high-quality products of Uganda with the United States, and we've partnered with Nile Tea Uganda (NT) to make it happen. Together, we're bringing the special variety of Hibiscus Sabdariffa, known as 'Simply Hibi', to the discerning palates of the US select market.
Ms. Victoria Burke is the founder of this amazing operation and has been with NT since 2005. With years of experience consulting for companies exporting organic products from Africa, Burke is a visionary who played a key role in NT's early days. She helped recruit and train farmers, expand production capacity, and select cultivars in various districts throughout Uganda.
Originally from Uganda, Burke has experienced the devastating effects of war. Despite losing eleven women producers of hibiscus to Kony's rebels (the Lord's Resistance Army or the LRA), Burke persevered and continued to work with Nile Teas. NT began with only 54 farmers in one district, but within three years, it expanded to over 2000 farms operating in six districts, with projects extending throughout Eastern parts of the country.
Our operation is a niche within the farming industry with a short supply-chain approach. We handle farm production, processing (NT), and value addition and distribution (IA) of the end product - Simply Hibi. Ibis Atlantic represents the production end of a vertically integrated business model that benefits both consumers and small holder-farmers through a very short value-added supply chain. We take innovative plant materials from seed to store shelves within East Africa, the UK, and now the US market.
At Ibis Atlantic, we're passionate about improving the livelihoods of many small holder farmers in Uganda who lack market opportunities for their products. OUR FOUNDER
It all begins with an idea.
Founder Ms. Victoria Burke has been with NT since 2005. Burke spent 5 years in East Africa consulting for companies whose purpose was to export organic products from Africa. Burke consulted for Nile Teas during their inception, participating in farmer recruitment and training, as well as growing the production capacity for NT along with other companies. Originally from Uganda, Burke has witnessed the atrocities of war, where in one instance she lost eleven women producers of hibiscus to an ambush by Kony’s rebels (the Lord’s Resistance Army-AKA LRA)
